What a retained technology advisory arrangement actually looks like
The retained advisory arrangement at TechVault Pulse Lab is the service that is hardest to describe in a brochure, because what it covers varies considerably from one client to the next. The common thread is that the client has a named, independent technology adviser they can call before a board meeting, before signing a contract, or when something unexpected happens and they need a straight answer.
How the monthly sessions work
Each month includes a scheduled session of ninety minutes, held by video call or in person depending on the client's preference. The agenda is set by the client in the week before the session. Between sessions, there is access by email and phone for questions that cannot wait. The expectation is that a response comes within one business day.
The sessions cover whatever is most pressing. In some months that is a specific decision the client is facing. In others it is a review of progress against the technology roadmap, or preparation for a board presentation, or a conversation about a vendor relationship that is not going as expected.
Who the arrangement suits
The clients who get most from a retained arrangement are typically organisations that have a technology programme underway but do not have a chief technology officer or a senior technology leader with the bandwidth to provide strategic oversight. The arrangement gives the leadership team an independent perspective without the cost of a full-time hire.
It also suits organisations that have completed a significant technology project and want ongoing assurance that the system is performing as expected and that the next set of decisions is being made with adequate information. The post-project period is often when the most consequential decisions about a system are made, and it is the period when external oversight is most frequently dropped.
What it does not cover
A retained advisory arrangement is not a managed service. It does not include hands-on technical work, vendor management, or project delivery. If an engagement requires that kind of involvement, it is scoped separately. The advisory arrangement is specifically about strategic oversight and independent judgement.
The minimum commitment is three months. Most clients continue for longer, and several have maintained the arrangement for two years or more. The arrangement can be paused if the client's situation changes, with two weeks' notice.
If you are considering whether a retained arrangement would be useful for your organisation, the easiest way to find out is a thirty-minute call. There is no obligation and no sales process.
